Are you like me, interested in learning French? Perhaps you are motivated by a desire to visit Paris and want to be able to communicate without looking like a complete tourist. Perhaps your reasons are more practical. The world is becoming more interconnected every year and while English may still be the primary language of world business, it is not as dominate as it once was. These days people who can speak multiple languages have a very real competitive edge in the job market. If you have decided to jump in and learn a new language make sure you start by doing a little research.
First and foremost, choose the language you are most interested in and make sure you are motivated. Second, spend the time to check out all the modern tools available to help you. Things have changed dramatically in recent years. Formal classes and memorization are no longer your only choices. Instead, there are many online language learning applications available and also language learning software programs are much more sophisticated than they used to be. Just be persistent. By looking online you can find everything from free resources such as worksheets, videos, vocabulary lists, etc. to paid programs at online universities. The other alternative is investing in software programs such as Rosetta Stone that will allow you to work at your own pace.
Finally, if you are less technologically inclined, you can always check out local community programs such YMCA or recreational programs. No matter which method you choose, just remember the funner you make it the more successful you will be.
